The Return of the King
Some of you may have asked where I’ve been. No, I haven’t quit. Nor have I given up on this blog or forgotten the rather therapeutic venting that it allows me. I am simply…well…moving.Actually, the proper phrase is “moved”, as in I have already done it.
I had a bit of a housing dilemma, that being I had to move. I looked all over the place for somewhere to live, and wound up finding a wee apartment that is, I must admit, larger than my old one. I didn’t think it was until I got all my stuff here – i.e., TV, DVD collection, recliner, computer setup, bed, ect. It’s got a 18’x 15’ kitchen. Which is so large that my computer desk has wound up in here. My living room is too small to fit my computer in there – although I did consider it, it’s just not possible. One wall is taken up by a rather large radiator, while, opposite it, a fake fireplace is set up.
I must admit that the fake fireplace is rather nice-looking. But, it’s also taking up space. I attempted to place my tv in front of it, to which my mother almost had a heart attack. “You can’t put a tv in front of that!”
Darn.
So, I put my tv in front of my bow window instead. I say “bow window” when in fact it’s three windows. Two at an angle, and one pushed out farther. The tv is perfectly centered in the center window.
Hardwood floors are now my new flooring companions, and, after a full day of Murphy’s Oil Soap, and a full bottle of Old English Dark Wood restoration liquid, the floors are almost acceptable.
I can’t help but wonder at who’s lived here before me.
What were they like? Were they nice? Were they mean? Did they have any children?
When I was putting in my furniture, I found wear marks on interesting parts of the apartment. Not high traffic parts, where you would assume people would walk, but in odd locations. Who lived here before me, and what were they doing to put a wear mark here?
In the kitchen, apparently the previous tenet messed up the floors so badly that vinyl flooring was put down. Oddly enough, it’s not in the whole kitchen. Just the center of it. Plus, it’s one solid piece. And, being that the kitchen is larger, that leaves a “border” around the vinyl flooring. A foot-and-a-half border around the vinyl floor. It’s odd looking, but I can live with it.
At first I fought moving here, but, after being here, I don’t know why.
At my old apartment, when I came home, odds were that my landlord had parked his car in my place. That meant I had to park out on the street. The ceiling was collapsing in three rooms, with mold growing in all three locations. Plus, the wall in the bedroom was caving in.
The windows were so old that air flowed from the outside to the inside at will. The house on the outside looked horrible. The old yellow paint was falling off the house.
The landlord and his family had taken up the other three apartments around me. And, they had dogs.
I like dogs. I grew up with them, and, right now at my parent’s house, is my dog. Who lives for “Sunday” because that’s the day I come to visit him.
However, at my previous apartment, the landlord and his family believed that you should let the dogs bark until they got tired.
So, at 7am, bark because a car drove past. 11pm, bark because I walked to my bathroom. At 1:00am, bark because I got back from a movie, and they can hear me.
Weird.
In any case, this place is much better. There are no dogs barking. No mold. No ceilings caving in. There’s a PLOWED driveway! My own parking space! WOO-HOO! And, the driveway is paved.
On the job front – well, I have one now. I work for a local tv station and work on “improving their image”. My job basically involves me in front of a computer using Adobe Premiere and After Effects to make stuff look cool.
I live for this stuff.
Unfortunetly, the job is only part time right now. That, coupled with the low pay and the only 20 hours given means that I’m still hurting for cash right now.
I’m also going out of my mind in this apartment.
No internet stinks. Seriously.
Plus, my Xbox DVD Remote Control isn’t working. That means no movies either.
Fabulous.
You never really realize how much you use something until it’s not working right. So, for ten days I was stuck with no internet, and no movies.
Great. Just great.
In any case, my internet is working now, and I’m back out on the web perusing the sites I’ve built and visiting blogs.
It’s about time.
